Several years ago, each of the appellants filed and settled lawsuits for personal injuries. Coffey settled in 1989, Wallace/Kisor settled in 1994, and Douglas settled in 1998. Each of the settlement agreements provided that the respective plaintiff would receive structured settlement payments, or periodic payments over a specified period of time. In each case, the settling insurance company purchased an annuity to fund the settlement payments.
